As part of preparation for interviews and being able to talk about our work to others, we had interviews set up with the 3rd years and asked to bring a portfolio to talk about our work. This was pretty daunting and worried me slightly as I don't feel I have work worthy enough to fill a portfolio, but using Christian's advice I collected about 5 samples of my animations at the moment, and included the group animation about skydiving as a final reference. I also put a few photographs of my handmade cards down as reference to other things I'm interested in.
The 'interview' was actually really good, it was much more like an informal talk or a catch up with the 3rd years to find out what they're doing, just as much as showing them what I am doing. I was quite taken aback when they responded to my little tester animation pieces, I didn't think I'd get such positive feedback. This definitely boosted my confidence in what I am doing and also makes me feel more confident in my decision to continue with animation as a specialist area.
It was also a really good opportunity to break that line between 2nd year and 3rd year, it's being given that opportunity to break the ice, I think they should be put in place much earlier on in the course and throughout first year in particular. It means building the bridge earlier on will help us to be more comfortable to approach people we are familiar with - I didn't know any of the (then) second years last year, and now through the first ice breaker task, the freshers VisCom pub crawl and the recent interviews, there's a handful of people I know I can approach, and I know what their specialist area is to be able to even point someone else in the right direction.
