I didn't really touch on anime throughout this brief, which looking back surprises me, as the Studio Ghibli films are a favourite of mine. I love the Ghibli films for the cultural references, the emotions they bring to the screen and most of all, their messages and themes. Top recommendations would be Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away.
I took a quick look into other anime films, including Angel's Egg, which is a rather strange but really beautiful piece by Mamoru Oshii. There's little dialogue so the essence of the film is provided by visuals and audio. I just find this kind of stuff really powerful. It'd be amazing to see something like this coming together from a first hand perspective. It really demonstrates the importance of sound as well, which I keep banging on about, but I guess that shows just how important I think it really is, and I'm really looking forward to eventually playing around with it.
(Here's part 1 of Angel's Egg...)
There is still a big list of things I want to try out, which I just haven't had chance to finish off or get round to doing yet or I have put to one side for the remainder of this project but would still like to pick up on at some point. The main thing that I really want to accomplish though, is a show reel that I can promote my work with and use to hopefully gain me a work placement in the near future.
